1. Greetings

The hellos you actually say, and when each one is safe.

Start with bună ziua. It is good day, and it is the greeting that does not get you in trouble: morning, afternoon, a shop, a stranger. Bună is shorter and belongs with people you already know. Salut is informal. Bună dimineața is morning only. Seara bună or bună seara is evening. Noapte bună is for sleep, not for leaving a shop at 8.

How are you is not a word-for-word copy of English. Ce faci? is what are you doing, said to one person you know, and it works as a hello. To a stranger or a group, ce faceți? The ordinary answer is bine, mulțumesc, then și tu? or și dumneavoastră?

Names: cum te cheamă? is how are you called, which is what people ask. You can answer mă numesc… Leave-taking: la revedere until we see each other again; pa with friends; pe curând if it will be soon.

Practice

Three small checks. Diacritics are welcome; mulțumesc without them still counts.

Next: numbers and family. Same words on words, inside a sentence on stories, and in the translator.
