Honey

Miere. Yard food and a gift, not a product line. The jar that still leaves a house wrapped in a cloth, or sits by the loaf with a spoon in it.

The stup at the edge

The hive sits where the orchard thins, or behind the house, past the woodpile and the hens. A stup, sometimes two, painted, a little leaning. Albine work the same air the yard already uses. Children are told not to stand in the line of the entrance. The dog learns. The well, the gate, the stove — those rooms are on the house. The road those yards share is on villages. This page is only that box at the edge, and what comes out of it.

On the table

Honey sits where bread sits. A round loaf, a knife, a spoon of miere instead of jam, or with the jam — that loaf is on bread. Tea with a spoon in it when someone coughs: not a pharmacy, the jar that was already in the cupboard. Winter opens it more often than July does. A guest may leave with a small jar if the house still has extra. That is a gift you do not invoice.

After the flowers

The season is late summer, after the flowering, when the orchard is quieter and the harvest is already thinking about jars. Combines, maize, and vines have their own hurry. The hive is slower. Someone lifts a frame, or they wait until a neighbor who still knows how comes by. You do not need a lecture on boxes and smoke. You need the habit of asking whether this yard still took honey this year, or only bought a plastic bear in town.

Neighbors

Albine are livestock with wings. People keep them the way they still keep hens: not as a hobby with a hashtag, as a neighbor that lives at the end of the garden and pays rent in jars. A sting is ordinary. A swarm in a tree is news over the fence. The sat still has a person you call when the bees decide to leave. You do not go looking for a wild hive the way a film looks for a close-up.

When the stup is gone

Fewer yards keep a hive. The word stayed. Miere still means the thick stuff you trust more if it came from someone you can name, even when the jar came from the piață. Apartment kitchens keep a squeeze bottle. The claim is the same as the loaf and the demijohn: whether this house still knows a stup, or only a shelf. This page is only that: the box at the edge of the orchard, the spoon on the loaf, the gift, and the word that outlasted the bees.
